Gypsy Music - a Tradition That Pulls People onto the Dance Floor

Gypsy music is one of the most recognisable musical traditions of Europe - and one of the hardest to fake. You can play the same notes, but without the characteristic freedom, virtuosity and emotion little remains of it. What makes it work, generation after generation?

Virtuosity as a way of telling stories

In the Romani tradition the instrument sings: melodies are ornamented, accelerated and suspended like the phrases of a good storyteller. A gipsy twist on the accordion or a mad trumpet run is not showing off for its own sake - it is a language in which joy and longing fit into a single phrase.

From the campfire to the big stages

Gypsy music has always been functional music - played for dancing, at weddings and feasts. That is exactly why it transfers so well to modern stages: its job was never to “be listened to in silence”, but to sweep people into a shared celebration. The wider world heard it thanks to phenomena like Taraf de Haïdouks and Goran Bregović’s film soundtracks.
